developing character

So yes, a big part of this whole film is developing a character, sine the film revolves around this singular character and her obstacles she faces. My partner will be playing the character in this film, and I wanted to show some physical traits of her so you an get a feeling of how she will look:

I've also related a mood board of my character:

I made this mood board on Canva, however the layout is made by me.

From the mood board you can clearly visualize the character, and see how her life is track, that's why she was born, all she want to do is be on that track.

There is a lot more that has to go into this character that will be probably be brought to light in future times, but as of now I hope you liked the character.

Recommendation:

Yes I didn't forgot! In this post I am recommending a movie, and it is called Midnight in Paris (if you have read my previous posts you would've seen how obsessed I am with this movie).

See you next time :)

3am listening party

Yes it's three in the morning but I just had a statement to make: I love music. Always have.

Music is a big part of my life because it can assist me on literally anything, and it can enhance a feeling so much more. Sad, happy, scared, anxious, you name it, I most likely have a playlist set for that emotion. That is why I was so excited to go through my playlists to find a perfect song for the opening film. Ok listen, I didn't just sit on my bed and started looking for a song for this film right there and then, but I have been thinking about it this week, and when a song starts playing on my phone and I find it interesting and that it could match the vibe of the film, I take a screenshot and look at it later.

I'm not gonna lie, I listen to a lot of music. And I mean a LOT. But somehow I think I found the perfect song for the film, well, three songs actually. The songs I found are below:

All of these songs match the vibe that my partner and I are looking for for this film. Now the hard part is to get approval to use them, that should be fun (i'm being sarcastic). What I'm most scared of is that we won't get an answer by the creators in time, but we will try our best.

I;m not gonna start sending emails because it is literally three in the morning, but as soon as I wake up tomorrow, I will be sending a million emails if I have to, to a thousand people for the approval.

Well good night for now, or good morning, not sure.

Also I decided since I love music so much, and the arts for that matter, I'm gonna start leaving recommendations at the end of my blog post for you guys to try out and see if you like them, this will include songs, movies, tv shows, books, podcasts, etc.

My recommendations in this post is the book Normal People by Sally Rooney. Let me just say this book, this book is a masterpiece. Currently reading Conversation with Friends, also by Sally Rooney, and I can't put it down. But I definitely recommend that book. If you like romance but also fiction but also a little of that feeling of liking someone but no knowing how to express it, that is the book for you.

Ok enough ranting, bye now:)

let's get to planning

Ok yes, we are planning. We still have some research to do obviously, butttt we can't wait. We are too impatient. Well, we both have this idea in mind, so what we decided to do a rough draft of our storyboard. We decided to do this so we can just have an idea of how all the shots and angles will play out together. Oh, I haven't even told you how what our idea is, my bad. Well, our idea starts of with this teenage girl, few years into high school, and is in love with track, she is excellent at it. However, she has many personal problems, but she finds track to be her escape, her therapy.

Since it is a two minute film, my partner and I decided to show all of these hardships that this girl experiences through flashback scenes. Basically we are going to be showing the girl running, stretching, warming up, and basically all the things you would typically do when getting ready to work our or do sport. While she is running and doing these things, we are gonna insert flashback scenes, we will be adding a filter to make it look like something from the past, like it already happened. We will be doing this throughout the film to show how she is taking out all her emotions from these bad memories and flashbacks into track and how she is running away from them. We want to show how these memories affect this girl so much, but track helps her relief that feeling.

Here is our storyboard:

As you an see it is a ROUGH rough draft, and is NOT our finalized storyboard; however, we wanted to do this to put our vision on paper.

Ok that's it for now, will be back though.

Byebye

made a decision (finally)

Yes, I did it. Well, we did it. We finally made a decision. Drum roll please......

We are sticking with our original idea. I had a feeling from the start that we were gonna stick to our original idea, but I've always thought that it's good to widen your choices, and to not stick to one things without exploring others. However, my partner and I did in fact decide to stick to our original idea. We decided this simply because we had the tools and resources to make this idea come to life, at least we think we do. We also decided to stick to this idea since we've never seen this before.

Our film opening is going to be a sports drama type of film. It is based on this girl who's escape is her sport track. I say escape because this girl has many personal issues going on in her life: doesn't get along with her dad, trouble with friends, not the best academically, fear of college decision making, and so on. We wanted something that we kind of had an idea on how this girl might be, since both my partner and I are in high school and have experienced similar things. We wanted to show this in our film opening. You are probably asking: How are you going to include all of this event in two minutes? Well, I have the answer for you: flashback scenes.

Yes, flashbacks scenes. I'm going to leave you with that thought. But trust me, I will be bak later today for an update.

While you think about that, I obviously had to do some research sine my range of knowledge of sport drama films is pretty narrow. Below are some movies that I researched and will hopefully get to watch today to get some more inspiration.

still debating

Soooo, yea I'm still on a blank. And I know that I already posted today but I have this idea in my mind, well two. My partner and I still really do like the idea of the girl and her escape being track, her passion. We believe that this can work for us due to the multiple tools that we have on hand like the locations and editing tools. However, we aren't fully convinced with it.

I think that we should do a more minimalistic and more simple opening. I think that what will happen is that we are gonna have too much going on in our intro, and it would look chaotic. I believe that we should do an intro thats like, how I mentioned before Midnight in Paris, or one that I though of was the film opening of Breakfast at Tiffany's. It is a simple yet informative opening that the viewer can entail what the main subject or idea of the film is within the first two minutes of it.

Opening scene: Breakfast at Tiffany's Opening Scene

I'm really liking the idea of vintage type of intro, maybe we can achieve it through the usage of old sounding music and filters. Wardrobe can also help us with us.

Few examples of the vibe that I would like:

                        Film: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Film: The Breakfast Club (1985)

Film: Pulp Fiction (1994)

Film: Clueless (1995)

But as you can tell, I have zero clue what I will do, I tend to be very undeceive, BUT I am also determined and hard working, and I think that makes a good balance.

feeling exhausted but determined

A three syllable word would define my current state. Yes. I am exhausted. There has been a lot going on recently and I've just been feeling pretty drained. School has been weighing me down lately, but I just really have to keep going. Everyone says junior year is hard, but I don't think you truly know how hard it is until you live through it.

Besides the point, I've been trying to come up with some idea for my Film Opening project, but my mind has gone blank. I can't think of anything. Every time I try and truly think of a unique idea, like the 2000s idea I had a few days ago (which is in my previous blog post), I feel like it won't turn out the way I want, or it will look basic. But I have been going through some previous student film opening projects, as well as researching some film opening to get some inspiration.

Since I don't have a definitive genre yet, the film openings that I have researched have been pretty broad. One being the opening scene for Midnight in Paris. Yes, this is bias (that is one of my favorite movies) butttt, it's the effort that counts.

I've always loved the idea of Paris, and I love everything about it. The weather, the language, the food. Absolutely everything. That is why I studied French for four years, and hope to live there at least at one point of my life. However, talking more about the opening, this film opening is truly beautiful. It is so aesthetically made, and with the mixture of the music, it adds so much more to the visuals.

Here is the link to the film opening: Midnight in Paris Film Opening

Some visuals from the film opening:

This film opening is so simple yet so beautiful. It is multiple still shots of the city of Paris throughout the day. Different lighting, colors, and angles are seen in every shot. A beautiful song is played in the background to enhance that French aesthetic and feeling. And, once seen the movie, one can truly say that the opening really captures the idea of the movie. It being the idea of the typical romanticized city of Paris (without including the part that the main characters travels back to the 20s every night when it hits midnight, but you would have to see the movie to find that out :), and meet some very iconic people).

I love this film opening so much, and is definitely on top of my list for my own film opening creation.

Ok well enough ranting about wanting to live in Paris, I've got some SAT studying to do. byeeee

Rough Start

Finally. We decided on a genre. Dum roll please..... Coming of Age. Yes, we decided on a coming of age, with a twist of your typical Teen Drama movie.

Yea no scratch that. We aren't doing that anymore.

So after a good 30 minutes of brainstorming, my partner and I decided to not go through our original story. We originally wanted to do a film relating to late 90s early 2000s, but after some research and multiple films like Clueless, Princess Diaries, and  Mean Girls, my partner and I observed that most had to do with a get ready, going to school type of vibe, and from previous knowledge we know that those films opening can get basic and is not a unique idea. So even though it was a really hard decision because we both love that era and all that goes with that era, we decided to start from scratch and think of something more original. However, here's a link of our original idea and our brainstorming:

Our OG plan that didn't go through

Even though we were both upset about this, we know that it's the best decision to our project. After more brainstorming we decided to go to a more Drama genre type of route. So, what we thought of is this girl and her love for track, that's her escape. It's girl that has a lot of problems in her personal life but when it comes to track, she has no problems with it, she finds comfort in it. So in our opening we would show her running in the track, and we will insert flashback scenes of her personal problems like fighting with parents, school grades, and things like that. However, I want some type of relationship in this film, maybe the inclusion of a friend.

We aren't really sure yet, but at least it's a start.

The Art of Blogging

The Art of Blogging

Today we learned all about blogging.

To be honest, I saw blogging as a way to just rant and tell all your life problems, but there is so much more to it. Blogging is a way to track progress. And progress, and being able to see it, is so rewarding.

Blogging has a lot of different elements, and all of this elements work together to make a good intriguing blog. In class we learned everything about blogging, from what to include in a blog to all the mistakes that people make when creating one. We learned all about the importance of various medias and visuals that MUST be included in your blog to make it intriguing to the general public.

As a class we talked about things to include like links, visuals, and texts, as well as all the evidence that we need in our blogs to make it efficient. Evidence like our research, our planning process, production, revision and reflection. I have called it the RPPRR process, lmao.

                    R - research
                    P - planning
                    P - production
                    R - revision
                    R - reflection

We also looked at sample projects to get inspiration.

My partner and I are still deciding what we want our project to look like, our genre, music, and overall vibe. We were talking about doing some type of adventure them, or coming of age type of thing, but we are still undecided.

I took notes during class to make sure I didn't miss anything from the lesson, as well as asking myself some questions on what I want my project to look like.

The First of Many to Come (Portfolio Project Post #1)

The First of Many to Come

Yup, the title says it all.

I've never had a blog, but I'm surprisingly looking forward to continue it. Now that I have finished a big project, my Music Marketing Project (look at by previous post if interested), I am ready to document my next journey: my Portfolio Project.

My teacher has been mentioning the Portfolio Project multiple times throughout the year, and I always thought I had plenty of time. I would tell my self, "Pfft, that's not due for ages." Well, I stand uncorrected, because the time is now.

Being finally assigned the Portfolio Project, I am realizing that the year is coming to the end, it's my last major project for the class. In one way it makes me upset, but I am very excited to start it.

I will be documenting, in this blog, every step of the way and every decision I make regarding this project, most specially my Film Opening Project.

This being a big project, I want to schedule my time wisely within the next eight weeks, I don't want to procrastinate it. I plan to be organized and efficient when it comes to tackling and completing this project.

My Plan

This is the plan I came up with and strive to follow (hopefully) for my film opening.
  1. Come up with an idea for my opening.
  2. Research - Feel confident in what my genre, plot, and techniques are.
  3. Pick location settings, characters, props, etc.
  4. Make a storyboard.
  5. Production - film.
  6. Post production - edit
  7. Reflection
And throughout all of this, I will be documenting it all. This shall be fun.

Music Marketing Project Blog Post #2

MUSIC MARKETING PROJECT

I've never done this type of project. From creating a new artist, to coming up with a marketing campaign from the ground up had it's challenges, but I would be lying if I didn't say that it was a really fun and learning experience. I learned meany things, and through research for this project I learned a lot about the music industry that I didn't have the slightest idea that existed. In this post I will give an outline of the various of steps that my group took to create this project, as well as our obstacles as they came about.

The Planning

When my group and I were giving the instructions for the project, a way that we organized ourselves by planning; this made us not feel overwhelmed. We tracked everything we did with dates, while also planning the days of when we would film and edit our music video, when we wanted to be done with our research, and when we would make a visual presentation to show our class.

The planning process, even though it only took us roughly 20 minutes, it really helped us in the long run, and created that sense of organization and time management.

These were our steps to creating this project:
  1. Receive genre and song
  2. Research that specific genre through different record labels and case studies
  3. Come up with an artist name and brand
  4. Brainstorm different marketing techniques/ how we want to distribute our artists music
  5. Come up with a theme (i.e. colors, specific vibe of the artist)
  6. Create a visual presentation of the marketing techniques, distribution, and marketing campaign as a whole
  7. Create a story board for the music video
  8. Film
  9. Edit
  10. Put the presentation together

Research

To be able to have an accurate and precise campaign, research had to be done. We research two different record companies that represented artist similar to the genre that we were assigned, Hip Hop Funk, as well as two artist per label.

The two record labels we researched were Shady Records and RCA Records; two well know record labels in the music industry. By researching these label we were able to get a view on marketing strategies that they have used to market their artist that may serve us for our own artist.

We created charts to distribute the information more evenly and easier for us to understand. The charts looked something like this:

History

Artists/Groups

Case Study #1:

Case Study #2:

Through these chart we were able to organize our research accordingly. Our research consisted of the record labels history like date published, founder, and timeline, it also consisted of the various artist they represented and two case studies.  These two case studies consisted of their most popular artist that also related to our genre and that could relate to our potential artist. These artist included Eminem for Shady Records, and Alicia Keys for RCA Records.

The research truly helped us to come up with a functional and successful campaign.

Our Brand

To make our artist/brand unique, we decided to build our campaign around a message. That message being the awareness of drug and substance abuse.

Due to the quirky and funky rhythm and sounds of our chosen song "Me and Your Mama" by Childish Gambino, we were able to use this message since it could correlate with the sounds in the song.

We changed our song name to "chasing the next high" by our brand new artist Wake Up, a duo. What is significant about our artist is that their physical traits and form are anonymous, similar to what singer songwriter Sia did, another example being Marshmello. with having an anonymous identity, we could lead our artist to having a focus on this substance abuse message, more than the common artists that rely on their physical attributes to market themselves.

As a group we did have a few discussions and disagreements about how this would be seen in the public eye, if a new artist should be anonymous. But with research and ideas being passed we decided this this would be a cool and different idea for an artist.

Once we decided this, the music video and the visual presentation, a power point in our case, was easy to establish and create.

Marketing and Distribution

Since it's a brand new artist, good marketing and distribution techniques must be used to reach an audience.

Our artist relied heavily on social media since our target audience were 12 - 24 year olds, but any range of age could relate to our music. We used platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram to interact with our audience as well as promoting our artist, and an official website was created to assist any fan or viewer about our artist.

Website: https://wakeupofficial.carrd.co/

We distributed our artist content and music through three major platform that we found, through research, that were the most popular and most common in the general public. Those platforms being Spotify Music, Apple Music, and YouTube.

We also created a recognizable logo that makes up the profile picture of all our social media.

Below our some of the ways that we interacted with our audience as well as the aesthetic of our social media.

Storyboard

Now that we had most of our marketing strategies down, the only thing we only had left was to create a storyboard for our music video. The storyboard helped us make an outline of what the video would look like. Our storyboard is shown below:

Production & Post-Production

While filming, we choose different places to film at to add depth to the video, as well as making it more intriguing. The whole idea of our music video was to show the reoccurring cycle of someone relapsing. Our video starts with our main character getting the drugs and the whole journey that comes with it. We wanted to do a storytelling based video to tie bak to our whole message of our campaign. Post-production, we had to group our videos and edit them together. We added some special effects like filters and slow mo to add to that sense of confusion and high.

Even though it was a hard idea to film, as a whole I think we captured that essence without being too in depth and since it can be a sensitive topi for a certain audience we didn't want it to affect our artists image.

In the video we wanted to show both point of views that someone might have when they are relapsing or someone witnessing someone who is going through something similar. We wanted to show the glamorized par of it, which is something that many people see it as. For these types of scenes we included tools like slow mo, LED lights, and slow movement to add to that effects of losing conscious. However, we also wanted to show the dark part. The part where someone feels lonely, trapped, and helpless. For these shots we included lots of quick shots and jump cuts to add to that sense of chaos.

We believe that we captured what we wanted, and when presented we believe that the message was received.

Reflection

Through this whole experience I learned time management, group collaborating, and organization strategies. Through multiple obstacles, my group was able to accommodate and resolve our problems. We presented a good presentation that I am truly proud of. It took us multiple days and multiple steps but at the end it was all worth it, and the rewards from this experience was all worth it.

goodbye for now (ccr)

The day has come. I thank you for following me along on this journey, and I promise to come back. I present you my Creative Critical Reflect...
